“…Charm had a personality that was lively and young at heart. She had been the celebrity in our neighborhood and was known as Elvis’s aunt. A 1977 El Dorado Cadillac was parked in her driveway, and it had the initials EAP placed on the driver’s side door…it stood for Elvis Aaron Presley. She was the president of a local fan club and had visited Graceland many times. It wasn’t until after I became her guardian, and had she had passed away that I remembered an event that had taken place when I was thirteen years old—in 1977.
…Her house was dainty; it was a mid-century ranch with pink and white trim. I saw this tall, glamorous woman, dressed à la Audrey Hepburn, with plaid cigarette pants, a sleeveless ivory top and short white gloves—topped off with a large-brimmed straw hat pruning her rose garden. I thought in my mind, I want to be like her, very glamorous. I really like this house; I would like to live here one day.
…After creating my postcard for Postcards to the Universe, I currently live in her house, a house that she loved very much. I am the caretaker for this little palace, one that I inhabited in my dreams as a child. I was not so bold to believe that I could ever live in such a place, but to me, it is my palace, a kingdom of sorts.”
